The annual Old Leigh Regatta is a charity event organised in aid of
the local scout community located within Leigh-on-sea Old Town. All
proceeds raised benefit these groups enabling them to continue their
activities for the younger generation. There are 3 scout
organisations located in the Old town, 3rd Chalkwell Bay,
4th/6th Leigh-on-sea and the Southend West
Explorers. As well as the local Scout groups, each year’s regatta
supports an additional nominated Charity.
Old Leigh High Street closes for the regatta weekend to allow us to
organise an array of fun family events and activities. There is live
music for all tastes (various bands playing all weekend on different
stages), Morris dancing, banana eating, cracker eating and cockle
eating competitions, for both children and adults, as well as
variety of stalls run by local shops and charities and various food
stalls catering for even the most sensitive palate.
The fun doesn’t stop there either, if you’re feeling particularly
strong why not attempt to climb the greasy pole or challenge a
friend to a Bowsprit pillow fight.
There are also water based events specifically for the 2 Sea Scout
groups, a competition that these young scouts train for all year
around. Known as the Annual Scout Pentathlon, these series of
challenges test both team work and skill. These Sea Scouts go head
to head in challenges including a Dinghy Tug of War, Dinghy
Sculling, and the famous ‘Leigh Marsh Race’.
